Madras museum is one of the best sightseeing place in Chennai that houses several ancient collections. Earlier the museum was located at Nungambakkam and later in 1851 it was shifted to its current location, Egmore. Madras museum is the second oldest museum while the Indian museum at Kolkata is the oldest.

Madras museum has a huge collection of archaeology and bronze items that date back to the 7 th century Pallava era, most of the edifices are over 100 years old. The museum compound houses 3 buildings and about 46 galleries. There are many bronze statues of Nataraja, Ardhanarishvara and many other gods. The museum has four galleries that include the Hindu Sculpture Gallery, Bronze Gallery, Amravathi Gallery and the National Art Gallery. There is also a special section for kids which is very interesting and useful for kids. The Italian style museum theatre follows an outstanding style of architecture. The theatre was constructed in the 19 th century by the British. The theatre allocates space for 600 people and a huge stage which is for theatrical performances. During the British era, the stage was used for performing English plays. Now, the theatre is used of different cultural activities.
