A visit to the crocodile bank at ChennaiPosted on June 21, 2016 by Saibala Grand

The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology is a reptile zoo and a herpetology research centre, the largest crocodile zoo in India. Madras Crocodile Bank Trust was started by the herpetologist Romulus Whitaker and his wife Zai Whitaker. They started this sanctuary to save reptiles which are very close to extinction and to protect endangered Indian crocodile species.

The zoo is spread across 8 and a half acres of land and houses gharials, turtles, several species of birds and snakes. The sanctuary has introduced a scheme were one can adopt a reptile and take care of its expenditures for a year or as wished by the adopter. The Irula Snake Catchers Industrial Cooperative Society runs a snake venom extraction centre in the zoo, the centre will be closed during the summer.

The zoo also houses an aquarium where the gharials live and it is also the main attraction for children. Volunteers educate the visitors how about how the reptiles lay eggs, how they protect the nest and how they take care of the young reptiles. Every Sunday at 3:00 pm they feed the Jaws III, the largest saltwater crocodile in India.

During the night crocodiles become most active. Hence there is a night safari also arranged by the zoo organisation. The tourists are provided with torches and are escorted by a trained guide around the zoo. You will able to see hundreds of red glowing eyes which can make your adrenaline spike. Many other fun-filled and informative activities are also conducted for the visitors.
